Chemical Policy

Chemicals, biological and soil samples are strictly controlled.

Contact the ALS users office for procedures for the permission, receipt, management, retention, and disposal of chemical, biological, and soil samples.

Users who bring or have chemicals shipped for their use at the Molecular Environmental Beamline are required to characterize, label, and tag them for health and safety removal before their departure at the end of each experiment.

No user chemicals can be stored.

Shipment of chemicals off the site is complicated and cannot be done without approved transportation-licensed carriers.

Users are required to clean and service all contaminated chemical lines, valves, pumps, and vacuum parts and restore them to working order for other users. In general the beamline funding will provide for normal purchases for upkeep of equipment and supplies. However, damage to equipment that occurs through unusual negligence will be replaced at the user's expense. A check off sheet reminds users about these duties, as well as provides an opportunity to note malfunctioning electronics, beam instabilities, and breakdowns.

Biosafety

Users wishing to bring samples such as bacteria or biofilms MUST contact Bruce King (BWKing@lbl.gov) and Donna Hamamoto (DJHamamoto@lbl.gov) to fill out the biohazard safety documentation at least 3 weeks prior to beamtime.

Only hazard class 1 bacterial samples are allowed.

Users will not be permitted to run experiments on biological samples without the proper documentation.

Chemical Waste
Users are responsible for proper disposal of their chemical wastes and can coordinate this with Donna Hamamoto (DJHamamoto@lbl.gov).
